Important Plan Guidelines
Does this reduce my year-end tax refund?
Generally no. Less tax is withheld from each paycheck because your taxable income is lower, so your taxes stay balanced. You receive the savings throughout the year in each paycheck.
Are elections set for the plan year?
Yes. Under IRS cafeteria plan regulations, your choice is irrevocable for the plan year unless you experience an IRS qualifying life event (marriage, birth, loss of other coverage) within 30 days.
What about Social Security retirement?
Because pre-tax deductions reduce gross FICA wages, your future Social Security retirement baseline is nominally affected (approx. $2 to $5/month per enrolled year), while saving you money immediately today.
